"Project A" : Congratulations to the puppet artists!

I am a very lucky teacher!! I have the most talented students in the world in my class!

First of all, let me tell you that we are welcoming a new student in our class : Woo-Jin Kim!! Welcome Woo-Jin!





With "Project Class A" we created the most beautiful puppets! As always, Ga-Eun, Yoo-Jin, Woo-Jin, Ga-Young, Ye-Ji and Woo-Jin worked very hard and showed a whole lot of creativity and perseverance to complete this craft project!

It isn't easy to make a puppet... but they did a wonderful job!

We had to be patient and careful to create the puppet's head. We used colored paper cups and construction paper to make our puppets.

Using fish   line isn't easy! But it's the best material to make the puppet's legs! It is also what we are using to control the puppet.

To make our puppets we used : colored paper cups, construction paper, pompoms, goggly eyes, fish line, straws and chopsticks.

The students will write their own stories and act them out , using their beautiful articulated puppets.

Hello everyone!
This week the students and I have been working on the human body! We learned the names of different body parts, and we did a role-play "at the doctor's office"!!
We also created some funny and colorful monsters, that we would love to introduce to you!

So here is my monster!
His name is Rainbow. He has three blue eyes, a big nose and green teeth.
He has an orange head and a yellow body.
He has six arms and twenty-four fingers (four fingers on each hand).
He has three legs and three feet.
He likes to wear colorful clothes, and shoes of different colors.

The students wrote their own fables!!

I am very proud of Woo-Jin, Ga-Young, Yoo-Jin, Ye-Ji and Ga-Eun. Last week I gave them a difficult assignment : they had to write their own fables! It isn't an easy task, but they did it wonderfully.

You can read their three stories on this blog :

- Ga-Young and Woo-Jin worked together and came up with 'The fish and the eagle' story plot. In the end they decided to write their own personal version of the same story.

- Ga-Eun, Ye-Ji and Yoo-Jin worked together as a team to write 'The Dolphin's Effort'.

In both stories you will discover a lesson on friendship, showing that people can be friends despite their differences!

THE DOLPHIN'S EFFORT

Today the dolphin's show opens.

Dolphin's name is BOO.

But Boo has no skills.

Boo is scared.

Finally the show starts.

It's Boo's turn.

Boo looks at one girls.

Her name is Kelly.

Her legs are sick.

She can't walk.

She is in a wheel chair.

Kelly says, "dolphin! you can jump! try again!"

With Kelly's words Boo has confidence.

So Boo jumps and and does very well.

He is happy!

The next day, Boo's show opens again.

Kelly came to Boo's show.

Boo listens to people's clap and he feels proud.

Kelly and Boo are now best friends.

Boo and Kelly have sunny smiles.

One day an eagle was flying in the sky.

A hunter shot the eagle in the wing.

The eagle's wing is broken.

He can't fly so he falls in the sea.

The fish takes the eagle to the beach.

The eagle says "Thank you." and Eagle and Fish become friends.

Eagle takes care of his wing and goes home.

The eagle is talking about the big fish story to his friends.

Eagle's friends think 'Fish must be delicious!' and say "let's go eat fish!".

Eagle is surprised, and dissuades eagle's friends.

"Fish saved my life. So please don`t eat!".

So eagle's friends don`t eat fish.

And eagle's friends are now friends with all the fish.

One day an eagle was flying in the sky.

This week -- Let's talk about food!

In our project class this week we're going to talk about food! The theme being 'Home Economics' we're going to learn about different foods, their flavors, taste and texture! And we're also planning on cooking a little something special... just in time for Easter!

My favorite food is sushi. I really enjoy the delicate flavor of the raw fish, the seaweed and the vinegary rice. It's very fresh and delicious to me! The raw fish is usually tender, soft and a little sweet, and combined with the slightly sour flavor of the rice -- because of the rice vinegar -- and it makes a very tasty combo!

Even if sushi is originally from Japan -- click here to learn more about it -- it's easy to find delicious sushi here in Korea. The fish is incredibly fresh, and the seaweed is very flavorful.

How to make a piggy bank

We had a lot of fun making paper mâché piggy banks in the project class. How did we do this? What do you need to make such a nice piggy bank? What are the steps?

This is Natalie's piggy,
made with pages from old textbooks.

MATERIAL :

To make a piggy bank like this you need :
- A balloon
- A small paper cup
- A cardboard egg carton
- Tape
- Special glue (made of water and flour)
- Newspaper
- Colored paper

STEP #1 -- MAKE THE GLUE
To make the glue, mix three (3) cups of water and three (3) tablespoons of flour in a saucepan.

Whisk well, until there are no lumps left in the mixture. Bring the mixture to a boil, while stirring constantly. 

When it starts to boil, turn the heat off and let it cool.

Make the piggy's snout with a paper cup.

STEP #2 -- MAKE THE PIG "SKELETON"

First, blow up the balloon to the size you want. Tie the balloon.
After, cut the top of the paper cup and open it like a flower (see picture).

Tape the cup to the balloon, covering the opening of the balloon.
Secure the cup with a few pieces of tape. You don't need to use much tape: only a few pieces will work to keep the nose in place.

Attach the 4 legs of the piggy with tape.

To make the legs of the piggy, use sections of cardboard egg cartons. Cut one egg hole for each leg, and two extra pieces for the pig's ears.

Attach the legs to the balloon with tape. Do it carefully so the balloon doesn't pop. Be sure that your piggy is standing properly and can rest on its four legs.

When the legs are attached, do the same with the ears.

Cover the pig with strips of newspaper.

STEP #3 -- COVER THE PIGGY WITH NEWSPAPER

Tear newspaper into long strips. Do not cut the paper with scissors, use your hands to tear it.

Dip the newspaper strips in the glue (both sides) and remove the excess glue with your fingers.

Apply the strips of glued paper onto the pig. Make sure to cover every part of the pig, including the ears, feet and snout. Apply one or two layer(s) of newspaper onto the pig at this point. Smooth it down with your fingers. Make sure that all surface is covered.

When your first layers of newspaper are properly applied, you can let your pig dry for at least 24 hours. As we didn't have much time in class we applied the colored paper directly onto the newspaper. This technique works too, but the drying time will be longer afterwards.

Cover the pig with some colored paper.

STEP #4 -- COVER THE PIGGY WITH COLORED PAPER

Tear some colored paper into long strips. Do not cut the paper with scissors, use your hands to tear it. You can use any paper you like : wrapping paper, colored pages, magazines, old textbooks.... anything you like!

In our class we printed images of foreign currencies on colored paper and we used this to make our piggies.

Dip the paper strips in the glue (both sides) and remove the excess glue with your fingers. The same way you did it with the newspaper, apply the strips of glued paper onto the pig. Make sure to cover every part of the pig, including the ears, feet and snout. Smooth it down with your fingers. Make sure that all surface is covered.

STEP #5 -- LET THE PIG DRY COMPLETELY

This step is very important. You must let your piggy dry COMPLETELY and it may take up to 2 or 3 days. If possible, place your piggy in the sun, in a nice warm place with good aeration.

If you wish, you can place your pig in a warm oven to speed up the drying process. Just warm up your oven, then turn the heat off and put the piggy inside, with the door slightly ajar. Never put your pig in a turned-on oven.

STEP #6 -- FINAL TOUCH

When you piggy is completely dry, you can apply one or two coat(s) of varnish on it to protect it and make it nice and shiny.

Afterwards, cut the coin slot with a small utility knife and pull out the balloon with tweezers.

Hello! My name is Ga-young kim. I`m 12 years old. I make piggy bank in project class. My piggy bank is red. It so cute but pig`s leg isn`t touching the desk.(my piggy bank`s leg so short..) I veay sad! but nose is so cute. I made my pig with red paper and pictures of U.S.A dollars. We use the balloon made the piggy bank. It`s funny made pig and I hope piggy bank is full of money!
